What's New?

News Flash . . . Cats and Dogs Stop Fighting!

If your business relies upon data, as most do, it is a very exciting time. Having lived through just about the whole computer revolution, I have seen how it has changed business culture, especially how people work together. It is curious that the power of hardware and software has improved so much but the promise of better "team work" has always seemed to lag if not get worse. Fortunately, the software industry has finally got it figured out and it means a great deal to your business.

The concept is Service Oriented Architecture. While SOA is viewed as a technology innovation, it is also a real solution to many technology related people issues. SOA, without the techno-jargon, makes it so everyone gets what they want. Executives (or just "the boss" as the case may be), Sales, Marketing, Technology, CUSTOMERS . . . everyone has it their way. Information, how it is delivered, and most importantly what form it takes is what SOA does. Here are a few specifics:

- Everyone's data is available to everyone else, security rules permitting. This includes databases, documents, spreadsheets . . .
- Everyone keeps control of their own data; that is it stays the way the owner wants to maintain it.
- Everyone has everyone else's information delivered in the form they want.

SOA is still maturing. The concept and basic technology have been around for a few years. However, the big change recently is the arrival of new software product features to support it. The 2008 version of SQL Server, my primary skill, has a strong SOA basis and can help build better team work between technology departments and disciplines. (For us techies . . . Yes! Peace is coming to IT.)

If you are a business information user, keep an eye out for SOA and adopt it your first opportunity. You will spend more time doing your real job as opposed to working out information and technology issues. You know how that is sometimes . . . truly like Cats and Dogs fighting.
