Strengths
With a broad background ranging from university faculty, IBM Research, capital markets (options trading / American Stock Exchange member), and, for the last 10 years, IT consulting, I bring a wide set of both technical and business skills to any customer engagement.
I have considerable project management experience from initial budgeting and planning to leading technical teams during project execution. I often take the lead in technical sales initiatives, including writing proposals and preparing responses to RFPs.
Having extensive experience with Cisco and Microsoft technology solutions, my technical focus is on network infrastructures, including network design, optimization and documentation, remote access including wireless and VPN, voice data integration, and security.
Management
- Project Management - I have managed several large projects including a $5M network modernization project for two 600,000 square foot book distribution facilities, and the reorganization and upgrade of another publisher's IT resources for its seven sites and 1400 users. In addition, I have extensive experience using Microsoft Project for job planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and documentation.
Information Technology
- Microsoft Networking Solutions - I have 10 years experience planning, installing and configuring Microsoft servers and networks, including Active Directory, DHCP, DNS and WINS configuration. I also have considerable experience with Windows 2003 Terminal Server and Microsoft VPN solutions.
- 802.11 Wireless Technologies - For the last 18 months, I have studied and researched wireless networking, primarily based on 802.11 standards, and have passed six wireless certifications in the process. To date, I have performed a number of wireless installations for small organizations and am particularly interested in wireless security issues and voice over wireless solutions.
- Routing / WAN - I have considerable configuration experience with RIPv2, EIGRP and OSPF in a production environment. I have knowledge of IS-IS and BGP4, but no production experience as of yet. I have worked with Cisco 2600, 3600, and 7200 routers in production environments.
- Switching / LAN - I am familiar with advanced spanning-tree and VLAN configurations. I have designed new distribution and core switching solutions for the home offices of two large publishing firms and have worked with Cisco 3550 and 6500 switches, among others.
- Network Analysis & Documentation - I have considerable experience with protocol, network traffic, and application analysis tools (e.g., Network General's Sniffer as well as traffic analysis tools from Packeteer and Network Health). I also have extensive experience creating network documentation using Microsoft's Visio product.
Training & Development
- Cisco Training Delivery - I have designed and taught preparation classes for CCNA certification both at a training center and for a corporate client.
- Microsoft Training Delivery - Over 1000 hours teaching classes at a Microsoft certified training center in courses focused on MCSE preparation, including courses on TCP/IP, Exchange, and IIS. Taught a special course on Windows 2000 for a corporate client.
- University Teaching - Four years undergraduate teaching and research as a full-time Instructor at Carnegie Mellon University and two years teaching and research as an Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Taught courses on human learning and memory and on the application of computer science to cognitive psychology.
