Provide expertise in high-throughput user interfaces and clinical acceptability. Engagements include Northrop Grumman (for DoD), Booz Allen Hamilton, the National Cancer Institute's caBIG project, Medicomp (Medcin project), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and a Community Health Center. 2004 - present.
- Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine - Director, Oncology Info. Management & Technology - 2/2003 - 9/2004 - Hired as the Cancer Center's first CIO, a change agent for a 27-year-old oncology system. Under matrixed accountability to enterprise CIO and Cancer Center director prepared my 25-member team for change beginning with a comprehensive analysis and instrumentation. Began automating a highly decentralized, manual research computing infrastructure.
- Cerner Corporation - Senior Product Manager - 6/2001 - 2/2003 - Responsible for Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and oncology product management activities including software product prioritization, planning, and specifications. Provided product and domain expertise to the sales, support, and engineering organizations.
- Datamedic, CIAI, VitalWorks, InfoCure - Vice President, Clinical Solutions - 5/1988 - 11/2000 - Started the clinical group and designed the entire product line, including a speech-driven radiology note writer (and its clinical programming language) and a complete specialty-specific EMR. Wrote the specs, guided the programmers, and helped the salespeople close the deals. Led all product management activities. The note writer was used by thousands of MDs as an OEM product.
- Point and Click Solutions - Chief Scientist - 11/2000 - 5/2001 - Principal Investigator of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1 contract from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The project was called "Patient-sourced data: Communication and EMR Integration" and facilitated patient-physician communication
- iKnowMed & CancerSource.com - Senior Director of Product Management - 11/2000 - 6/2001 - Developed and led all product management activities. Integrated the development activities of CancerSource with iKnowMed following a corporate acquisition. The company focused on software and content solutions for oncology and marketed the data to pharmaceutical customers.
- National Institutes of Health - Expert - 6/1993 - 4/1995 - Provided perspective on new technologies to the Information Systems Department of the NIH Clinical Center, a large clinical research facility. Implemented demonstrations in speech recognition, automated reporting, and software engineering practices. Trained in C programming, distributed databases, and management of government contracts. Two-year appointment.
- The Health Data Institute - Senior Scientist - 7/1986 - 5/1988 - Designed new products in the R & D group, including an expert system using insurance claims data to assess the quality and efficiency of care provided by individual MDs.
- The Mount Sinai Medical Center - Clinical Trials Unit Research Fellow - 9/1984 - 7/1985 - Department of Community Medicine, Clinical Trials Unit research fellow. Performed meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), including quality evaluation and pooling of results. Wrote a custom database for RCT quality scoring and statistics.
