Employment
- Luma Inc - Director of Engineering - 7/2006 - Current - Luma is a new startup founded by the same enterpreneur, Tony Thielman, who founded Trafficmac/Operative. Its business is exploiting the new technologies with debit cards, tap 'n go and cellular near field for retail sales and payroll purposes.
Tony and I enjoyed working together at Trafficmac/Operative so he asked me to run the technical group at Luma.
Since this is a new startup the position is sweat equity + shares pending first round funding.
- Children's Health Fund - Chief Technical Architect - 9/2005 - Current - Chief Technical Architect for EHRIS, an open source, networked electronic patient health records system. EHRIS was conceived to be low-cost software targeting small practices, community clinics and medically under-served patients,
The overwhelming challenge has been developing a formal requirements spec because while CHF is intimately familiar with clinical practice it isn't a software development company so it lacks project management expertise as well as the technical resources to build a functional spec.
- Operative - Lead Developer - 9/2003 - Current - Operative/Trafficmac is a 100+ employee startup focused on outsourced and ASP ad server operations for Fortune 500 companies. I was Employee #8, working almost entirely as a telecommuter since 2003.
I was on the original Gang of Three that built Operative's v2 Queue Management System, an ASP internet ad operations software for clients like FoxNews.com, Fox Sports, Wall Street Journal, SmartMoney, eBay, News Corp and Cars.com.
Since 2004, I've been Lead Developer for QMS and since May 2005 I've single-handedly maintained QMS, its servers and custom development requests for four of Operative's most demanding clients.
I built back-end processes for importing daily ad server placement data from DoubleClick's DART, Real Media's Open Ad Server (OAS), ValueClick and Advertising.com's ACE.
Installed, built and maintained PostgreSQL procs packages for QMS.
Built DHTML drag/drop ad server placement association tool.
Built BIF-based MS Excel export tools for interactive site reports.
Built SQL table package class to permit clients to maintain searchable custom tables within the turnkey environment and code base.
Built client invoicing tools.
Handle client interface and support issues.
- Community Connect - Managing Developer - 2/2002 - 8/2003 - Managing Developer/Technology Lead for Diversity Job Market, a jobs board in partnership with the New York Times.
Clients included Pepsi, Colgate, Target and the FBI. Maintained Oracle databases.
Managed product technical design, vendor selection and management.
Handled promotions and email marketing for 500,000 Jobs members.
Community Connect built and hosts three of the internet's highest-traffic web sites (800 million page views per month and 8 million registered users):
DiversityJobMarket
BlackPlanetJobs
AsianAvenueJobs
MiGenteJobs
Because of their exceptionally high traffic and an infrastructure that was operating near capacity, the major challenge with CCI's sites was developing efficient solutions which were also maintainable: data caching, use of content delivery systems, satellite and warehouse servers, well-reviewed code, etc.
- Zero Odor - lead developer - 2/2005 - 4/2005 - Technical architect and developer for three ecommerce web sites.

- IDG Publications - Technical editor - 9/1998 - 11/1998 - Technical editor for Linux for Dummies, Second Edition.
This was a short consulting job, basically fact checking the author's drafts and making suggestions for clarification purposes.
- Pure Carbon - Senior Developer - 8/2000 - 7/2001 - Senior web developer for PureCarbon's Job Planet HR recruiting web site. PureCarbon was started by a former director of recruiting Cisco.
I evaluated development technologies such as HTML templates and classified ad resume submission methods.
I was mainly just a senior perl developer working on the API team. What made this job unique however is that every developer and manager was a telecommuter.
Although we worked together at least nine hours every day, I didn't meet even one of them face to face for ten months. This led to many novel solutions for keeping everyone in close communications.
In fact, we had the best communications I've ever had with a development group. For instance, our 12-person team beat HotJobs' 60-person dev group to market with the same ASP software and won Southwestern Bell's and Citicorp's business.

- PBS Online / Learning Link - Lead Developer - 11/1992 - 7/1995 - Co-designer, developer and senior support engineer for Public Broadcasting Service's Learning Link, an internet based conferencing and content-delivery system of 40 servers.
The software involved development of internet mail and Usenet news clients, mailing list servers, Usenet-to-mail bridges, maintenance and security programs and automatic content propogation.
Built custom software for the various PBS affiliate sites.
For its time, Learning Link was rather ground-breaking software insofar as it was internet enabled, networked and made extensive use of SMTP, NNTP, FTP and other resources encapsulated in a UI that non-technical users could understand.
- Citibank, NA - software developer - 9/1989 - 4/1992 - Consultant to Humanware, New Product Development (NPD) and Bank-Customer Interaction (BCI) groups and Citibank Development Division under Larry Weiss.
Developed "best practices" UI/UE prototypes for Citibank software including the Citibank ATM (CAT), Citiphone and MortgagePower Plus.
Worked extensively with Murray Hill marketing and focus groups to test functional design prototypes.
- United States Postal Service - software developer - 10/1994 - 8/1995 - Built prototype and device drivers for the USPS Customer Service Kiosk.
I was hired by my former boss and head of Citibank Development, Larry Weiss, to work on a small team to construct an automated post office for deployment to shopping centers, airports, hotels, etc. My role was develop bullet proof drivers for the stamp printer, certified mail printer, credit card reader, cash dispenser, etc and to construct an API for same.
