5 Tips for a Successful Independent Career in 2012

We recently spent some time with a group of prospective consultants sharing the secrets of successful consulting career, during a session called “Is Independent Consulting Right for You?” The presentation and discussion included two longtime industry experts – our Director of Enrollments, Steve Arhanchet and our CEO, Gene Zaino, both of whom have worked with thousands of consultants directly to help support and launch their independent careers.

The sessions were developed on the premise that regardless of skill or expertise, there are some clear indicators of success. We highlight the top five characteristics of a successful solo career, including such aspects as state of mind, a results-orientation, and integrity, to name a few. In each, we explore the characteristic further to really lay out the indicators for self-evaluation by prospective solopreneurs.

We’ll admit it. We’re strong supporters of independent lifestyle. It’s because the data has told us regardless of why people become independent in the first place -- once they taste it, only one-in-five ever go back to a traditional career.

If you’re considering going solo, you aren’t alone. Our 5 annual predictions for work  certainly suggest it’s a good time to develop a strategy and approach to help you get on the bandwagon. We think that by the end of the decade, more than half of the private U.S. workforce will be career independents.
