Happy New Year! Go Google Yourself.

Posted by Stephanie LaBorde

Whether you're attending networking events or pitching prospective new clients, your name is bound to be Googled when an individual or a company wants to know more about you. It could happen after you've left a meeting or event, or it could happen mere moments after you've made someone's acquaintance for the first time through the use of a smartphone - but rest assured: you, my friend, will be Googled.

Gone are the days when your resume was the only source of information about your professional background. Self-Googling (or "ego-surfing" as it's sometimes called) is critical for managing your own brand. If someone Googled you right now, what would they see?

If you haven't done it lately - or ever - go ahead, give it a whirl. Go to Google.com, type your name into the search field and see what appears. If your name doesn't produce interesting or relevant results with an initial search, prospective clients make take the "long-tail" approach and start adding more details about you to the search, such as your city of residence or former employers. If you have a common name, it will be an exercise in futility to manage all of the information associated with your name, but you can work on developing your professional online presence.

This month, the MBO Consulting Blog will explore simple steps you can take to manage your online reputation and impress prospective clients so you can start the new year off on the right foot. Stay tuned for details!

What did you find when you Googled yourself? Funny? Educational? Alarming? Post a response below and let us know!
