Moonlighting Has A New Twist -- Co-Working Late!

Posted by Liz Greene

Moonlighting is a old term for taking on additional work projects after hours, and for many freelancers and consultants, is one way to get started in self-employment.

After all, if you can start your own consulting business while you still have some steady income flowing in during the day, that can make for a safer financial transition to independence.

But a group of freelancers and consultants in New York City, by the name of the New York Nightowls, is taking the concept of moonlighting literally. They've started a co-working meetup group that meets late, according to this story in the Boston Globe.

We've written about the wonders of coworking for freelancers in past blog posts, but I love that this group is pushing the envelope on freelance productivity. Burning the midnight oil is nothing new for high performing independent contractors, but now we can do it in a supportive environment.

The whole thing reminds me of late night university study sessions in the stacks of the college library.

I'm also a little jealous. Las Vegas, where I am based, doesn't have a coworking group or space, and the availability of late night wifi for groups is pretty scarce. If you're a nightowl in Vegas, contact me and let's get something going!

Is working late at night one of your consulting strategies? When are you most productive?

If co-working is one of your secrets of freelance success, leave us a comment and tell us why (and where) you do it!
