Secrets of Consulting Success

Posted by Liz Greene

One of my favorite projects at MBO Partners is planning our monthly consulting seminar. Each month I am challenged to present new content that is practical, accessible, and relevant for independent consultants, independent contractors, and freelancers working through this recession. While some of our recent events have been topical classes (you can check out our new Vimeo page for archives of our videos on subjects like Calculating Your Bill Rate or Consulting Contracts 101), this month we wanted to step outside of that mold and offer up some real world insight.

Our next seminar will be this September 17th, and I am taking a leap to call it Secrets of Consulting Success. It has been said that a mentor is someone whose hindsight can become your foresight. In almost every presentation he gives on the topic of becoming a consultant, Gene Zaino (President and CEO of MBO Partners) tells his listeners,

“Don’t underestimate the power of having good mentors. There are people out there who have done this, they’ve figured it out and learned some things along the way, and truth be told they will be happy to help you out and share some of their expertise. Don’t be shy – take advantage of it.”

If you haven’t identified a mentor for your consulting business, now’s the time to get with it. Refresh your own professional network, and leverage the MBO Partners social network of successful consultants – you can find them in our MBO Partners LinkedIn group – and start connecting and asking questions. And in the meantime, at least you can “borrow” some experienced mentors during our upcoming one-hour webcast: for this month’s free consulting seminar, we’re pulling together a special panel of experienced, successful independent consultants. They’ve all been doing this on their own for several years, and every consultant or freelancer we have selected is weathering this economic storm and maintaining healthy cash flow. Some of them are doing even better in the new economy!

Whether you have been on your own for some time, or you suddenly find yourself “funemployed” and trying to find your own work, I’d like to invite you to come participate. Bring us your most challenging questions about how to launch and grow a consulting business, or post your quandaries below in the comments and I’ll raise them to our panel. This is your opportunity to connect with a successful mentor and find out everything you wanted to know about independent consulting, but were afraid to ask. You can register here for free.

Maximizing Talent, Minimizing Risk: New Approaches for Compliant Independent Contractor Engagement

Conventional Contingent Workforce Management (CWM) approaches are weak when it comes to wrangling independent contractors. But recent innovations are being integrated into more traditional VMS/MSP programs with powerful results. This whitepaper shows how to focus on the root cause of independent contractor challenges, rather than just chasing symptoms, and reap significant risk mitigation in the process.
