I’m an attorney specializing in communications law, and have been practicing on my own since 1996. I came to MBO Partners 3 years ago as an independent contractor working for Sprint. My client discovered that it would be less risky and more cost effective to have MBO facilitate payments and aggregate the independent contractors together in lieu of having me and all the others operate as separate vendors. So the client referred me, and MBO set it all up.
I do a variety of work in communications law, such as FCC licensing, drafting contracts, and contract negotiation. In the past, I’ve done work for other large communications companies like WorldCom/MCI. I also work with schools and small businesses that have FCC licenses and operate systems throughout the country. As an independent consultant, I can work with my primary client and still be free to pursue other assignments at the same time.
I love the work I do, it’s a very exciting field. This area of communications has had its ups and downs . . . over the next few years it will be hitting the high point with convergence of voice, internet, video, and beyond, coming together into handheld devices, like laptops in your hand. In three to five years, we should be at the peak of that cycle; I’m looking forward to new challenges.
The time management aspect of working through MBO Partners is very helpful – the MyBizOffice system has expense handling with automated billing of those expenses to my client, for example.
Self incorporation is a lot of work, so for someone who wants to be a consultant but doesn’t want to set everything up on their own, MBO Partners is a great option. If you’re thinking about going out on your own, the MBO way is the way to go; just let them handle everything and it will make it easier for your client. This is a great situation for large companies because they can aggregate and consolidate their contractors under one umbrella. For companies like Sprint, it saves them a lot of headaches, a lot of administration, and a lot of money.
