Three million full-time independent workers—or 17.9% of full-time free agents— earned more than $100,000 in 2016, compared to 2 million in 2011—a 50% increase, the report found.

MBO Partners in April proposed a designation called "certified self-employed" workers. The company's detailed plan calls for the Small Business Administration to oversee the program. It would be limited to workers who charge at least $50 an hour, to protect employers from coercing other workers into the program. Certified self-employed workers would agree to pay taxes through a system such as the one MBO Partners operates. But they also would explicitly declare they are independent business owners and not employees of any company with which they work.

The introduction of Obamacare makes it possible for freelancers to get quality health insurance (although they may have to pay a hefty sum for it), and more than a quarter of freelancers say that they’re able to earn $75,000 to $100,000 on their own, according to a report released last summer by MBO Partners. Nearly 80 percent of those who work for themselves said they were happier that way and plan on remaining independent, and one in seven non-independent workers is considering going freelance.

In spite of a 5% decline in headcount this year, independent workers remain a powerful economic force, according to MBO Partners’ 2016 State of Independence in America report. Together, these Independents generate more than $1.1 trillion in annual income, equal to more than 6% of US GDP. Over the next five years, the research expects the number of full-time and part-time independents in America to grow by 16.4% to 34.1 million in 2021, at which time independents will constitute 29% of the private, non-farm workforce.
