Nicolette Taylor, a consultant services advisor for MBO Partners, tells the story of an experienced consultant who wanted – and found – a company to be his business’s advocate.
"It’s common for experienced consultants to have tried several services before they come to MBO Partners. In this case, the consultant loved our long record of experience and the freedom we provide for independent consultants.”
Not surprisingly, some of the consultants I speak to know about companies like MBO Partners. They’re experienced, they’re used portable employers of record (PERs) and they have a successful business structure.
But there’s a reason they’re calling me for a change.
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with a consultant who found MBO Partners through a search engine. He was looking for a change, specifically for an escape from administrative burdens and the dreaded busywork of contract details. He had been a successful consultant for years, finding his niche in being able to explain tech solutions in terms everyone could understand. He loved his work, but not the back-office details that took up billable hours for him.
The original reason he went independent was to spend more time with his family; the last thing he wanted was for his free time to be monopolized by contract administration, insurance requirements and jumping through engagement hurdles. He had no patience for contracts, and wanted to use a service that would take care of all of the ordinary details for him.
Enter MBO. After speaking with him on the phone, I could tell he had all the ingredients of a true consultant; he got his own projects, wanted to run his own business and knew his specialty. I described our service to him, and he was happiest about being able to leave contract administration to us. He was also pleased with how we handled his insurance requirements for big clients, so he wouldn’t have to hunt for the right policies for each new project.
What stood out most to me about this consultant was that he was working for the right reasons. He loved what he did, he just didn’t want to handle the mundane anymore. To him, our service translated to more time billing clients for the work he loves to do, and more importantly, more free afternoons with his daughter.
He had used other services in the past, but decided MBO was the right one for him. I’m glad he did, because his self-motivation and desire to do the work he loves makes a perfect example for consultants looking to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
As an independent consultant it's important to know what exactly soft skills are, why they matter, and how you can improve yours.
