It’s all about women here at MBO Partners this week. Perhaps it’s because we’re commissioning our new infographic on women in independent consulting (can’t wait to share), or because we’re focusing in on a question we’ve all had interest in for some time:
Why are women so successful at being solopreneurs –more so than they are at being traditional C-Suite execs, or traditional small business owners? (Yes, in independent life, women are a business majority).
It’s a tough, but compelling question, and I’m looking forward to sharing thoughts on what I’m now calling the “Third Path.”
For me, it’s not a Rosen v. Romney situation for women. That’s just too simplistic of a set up – black and white. The exciting thing for women in independent business is all the shades of grey. Not just full-time traditional work. Not just stay-at-home at all costs.
I catch up with a dear friend and former college roommate, discussing an “existential” conversation that began for us on Facebook chat. She shares that it is increasingly important to her, to do something she loves, and reject the Game of Thrones at her workplace. (How cliché, she says, and I say to her: but how true).
I tell her I think it’s pretty simple for women independent professionals. They get to this path because they choose work they love, and are willing to take all the burdens that come with it, without politics. They choose balance over traditional notions of progress, and perhaps they choose a life over work alone. But they don’t stop producing and delivering great results.
Along the way, they get happier, by and large, because their lives and work are so much better aligned and personalized.
It’s not that they reject a career road map. It’s that they morph from career professionals to business professionals – solopreneurs, momprenuers, consultants, freelancers, contractors or whatever -- and build a personal road map that includes both work and life.
That was my yesterday, and today it morphed into the notion of the third path.
In truth, I first started thinking about this topic years ago, and even started a company to help women find both growth and flexibility. I’m looking forward to sharing and building on the concept (so many Lessons Learned from both a company and personal lens), at our Webinar April 27 th .
