What are estimated taxes and why should I pay them?
Essentially, if you are in business for yourself, you generally need to make estimated tax payments quarterly if you expect to owe tax of $1,000 or more when you file your annual return.
Since sole proprietors and other small business owners do not have taxes automatically withheld from their paychecks like regular employees, the federal government relies on these individuals to pay estimated taxes on a quarterly basis. If these estimated tax payments aren't made, it's possible you could owe penalties during tax season.
