Cisco and MBO Partners: Engaging independent contractors safely and efficiently

    01 Introduction

Cisco uses MBO Partners as its engagement services provider for independent contractors and small businesses. MBO's services include ensuring proper legal classification for Cisco-referred contractors, onboarding, offering benefits to eligible contractors, and paying contractors on Cisco's behalf.

All professional internally identified independent contractors (i.e., those not recruited or sourced through a staffing company) must engage through the process below.

    02 Engaging independent contractors

Once you identify new contractors for projects, follow the steps below to engage them.

    1. Refer the contractor into the program.
To refer an independent contractor to the C-Worker program contact Art Rembelos arembelo@cisco.com with
      1. Name of the worker
      2. Worker email address
      3. Project description
      4. Intended start date
    2. Communicate expectations with the contractor.
Speak with or email the independent contractor to convey the following:
      1. MBO Partners will contact them to assist with the onboarding process. Contractors should watch their email for information and instructions.
      2. Stress that it is very important to be responsive to MBO's onboarding instructions. If the contractor completes the steps quickly, onboarding will typically take a week or less. Otherwise, the project may be delayed.
      3. If the contractor has additional workers assigned to the Cisco project, indicate that all these workers must undergo the same onboarding process.
      4. MBO will provide their payments and support them once the project begins.
    3. Create the project's SOW.
While the independent contractor completes the onboarding process, create the SOW. Blank SOW templates are below and detailed instructions are here. If you have questions about the Ariba PO set-up process, this site may help.
      1. Managed Project SOW Template (if the project is deliverable-based)
      2. Managed Service SOW Template (if the project is SLA-based)

    Two important notes:

    • Once you submit an SOW, MBO will review and sign it before returning it to Cisco for full execution. This process can take up to 48 business hours.
    • All new CORE independent contractors must undergo a background check. Please contact Leslie Lasher, lelasher@cisco.com for additional details. If required, the contractor must complete a background check before project's start date.
    03 Talent sourcing support

Cisco's dedicated Independent Talent Network (ITN) Team Manager will work with you to attract and hire from the pool of 130,000 Talent inside of MBO's marketplace. This Fortune 500-proven Talent exists across 18 skill domains and over 112 specialties, including cyber security, network engineering, finance/accounting, software programming, and business transformation. Note that a small sourcing fee applies for successful placements (15%), which is in addition to MBO's standard engagement service fees. This combined fee is still a fraction of the cost of working with traditional staffing suppliers.

Sourcing process: When you need MBO's help finding a contractor for a role, email Mike Cavaluzzi at mcavaluzzi@mbopartners.com.

We can begin the process of recruiting, screening, and submitting vetted Talent for your review afterward. For most roles, MBO's ITN team can deliver high-quality talent in 72 hours or less. You simply select the candidate which best matches your needs and we will then initiate our standard onboarding process.

    04 MBO's engagement services

MBO directs Cisco-referred contractors into one of three engagement services depending on their characteristics, expectations, and business qualifications:

    • Vendor Services: A business-to-business service for independent contractors who meet Cisco's criteria to engage as qualified vendors. Those interested in engaging through Vendor Services must pass a qualification evaluation.
    • Business Services: A unique engagement alternative for contractors who wish to work as compliant independent business owners (LLCs or corporations) but need assistance meeting and maintaining the appropriate credentials to do so.
    • Payroll Services: A conventional W-2 payrolling solution for hourly contractors who do not consider themselves true independent businesses.
