SITUATION

Designing a Contractor Management Program for the Future of Work

An American cloud-based software company was looking to expand their independent contractor workforce. They needed a vendor who could provide an extensive and formal compliance and engagement program, and they had a vision for restructuring how they engage all workers who were not full-time employees. MBO was tasked with not just maintaining compliance but helping design the program and bring it to life.

Today, the organization is deepening its relationship by pursuing a more holistic workforce optimization program, strategically re-envisioning its ideal mix of contract, SOW and independent talent, as well as looking at the proper ratio of FTEs to ICs.

SOLUTION

Holistic Oversight to Launch a Workforce Optimization Initiative

MBO worked collaboratively to update the company's policies and integrations for their independent workforce, developing an initiative to restructure how the company engaged anyone who was not a full-time employee-this included payroll workers, freelancers, and workers who fell under SOW spend. MBO examined processes holistically: seeing the program not just as a series of operational details, but also from a technology, systems, and people viewpoint to build an end-to-end solution that worked for both talent and enterprise alike.

Initially, the engagement was primarily around compliance, ensuring proper processes were followed for talent onboarding, engagement, and classification. As the company had a strong California presence, this became particularly important and complex after AB5. Eventually, the program expanded to also include direct sourcing; the organization utilized the MBO marketplace to source, manage, and engage, and re-engage talent using both a private talent network and MBO's larger database of qualified independent professionals in the technology space and beyond. Today, the organization is deepening its relationship by pursuing a more holistic workforce optimization program, strategically re-envisioning its ideal mix of contract, SOW, and independent talent, as well as looking at the proper ratio of FTEs to ICs.

RESULTS

Comprehensive Engagement and a Future-Forward Approach

This big initiative took the software company's total workforce optimization to the next level. By developing a comprehensive engagement and compliance program to manage all non-employee labor, MBO helped to give the company the enhanced flexibility, transparency, and efficiency needed to reduce costs and compliance risk. In the future, the company plans to grow their program and is already expanding MBO's services to streamline onboarding and engagement of independent talent for mergers and acquisitions.
