It has been a big week for independents. As Gene Zaino, MBO Partners CEO, wrote in a blog for Huffington Post, this is the year the government finally “gets to work” on creating real solutions that work for the independent economy. Another post on HuffPo gets to more of the details on why work needs to change. From constant connectivity and productivity struggles to antiquated labor laws, we know that work can’t continue as it has in the past.

The government is taking steps in the right direction. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez headed to Silicon Valley last week to discuss the on-demand economy with the companies and workers that live it every day. He also announced that he’ll re-instate a survey to help size the independent population.
