The Weekly Independent: February 1, 2016

Being a successful independent contractor or a client of choice isn’t just about doing the best work or having the best perks. It also means staying one step ahead of the curve. That’s why each week we bring you The Weekly Independent, a quick-hit digest of news of note from around the web.
- It has been a big week for independents. As Gene Zaino, MBO Partners CEO, wrote in a blog for Huffington Post, this is the year the government finally “gets to work” on creating real solutions that work for the independent economy. Another post on HuffPo gets to more of the details on why work needs to change. From constant connectivity and productivity struggles to antiquated labor laws, we know that work can’t continue as it has in the past.
- When you’re constantly connected, time management becomes an issue. Here are three ways to manage, from Inc. as well as specific tactics for handling Millennials in the workforce, from Fox Business.
- We know independence and the on demand economy is a major topic this week. Why? Vanity Fair dedicated a whole piece to the subject.
- Need a brief brush up on your labor law history? Contently has a great recap.
- The government is taking steps in the right direction. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez headed to Silicon Valley last week to discuss the on-demand economy with the companies and workers that live it every day. He also announced that he’ll re-instate a survey to help size the independent population.
- We spoke with CNN Money about what that means – and the challenges associated with measuring the independent and on demand workforce.
- NBC News continued the discussion, discussing issues of “workforce polarization.”
- The White House also announced new proposals to help workers save for retirement that would make savings more portable and effective for the increasingly mobile workforce.
Should you have any questions, we’re always here for you.
