SITUATION

Proactive Adaptation To The Next Way Of Working

In 2015, a Big 4 consulting firm declared that the world of work was changing. Together with executive leadership, the firm articulated a goal of shifting their workforce an optimized modelwhich strategically mixed a percentage of full-time employees with defined populations of offshore and independent contract labor. Numerous factors came into play: by shifting to a model that included both offshore and independent labor, they could significantly improve utilization. Leveraging independent professional talent also allowed the firm to access a population with key skills and knowledge, as well as more heterogeneous thinking, to better serve their clients. Further, the firm looked to reduce the costs and better mitigatethe risk associated with managing their existing contingent worker population while attracting and maintaining strong relationships with high-value independent professionals.

Their independent contractors had historically worked through an outdated technology platform and a third-party service provider. The consulting firm knew there was a better way-they needed a partner to create a streamlined, end-to end operating model that could handle engagement, onboarding, payment, and management of their contingent workforce, as well as complex worker classification issues. And while they were happy to build the solution and own the technical infrastructure, they needed a partner who truly understood the needs of the independent worker as well as the unique challenges of engaging in an enterprise grade model to help and manage the platform engagement. Enter, MBO Partners.

During their soft launch, the consulting firm engaged approximately 100 independent professionals and achieved nearly $1M in supply chain savings in just 9 months.

SOLUTION

A Customized- Self-Service Direct Sourcing Platform

The firm created a customized, self-service platform that allowed consulting firm managers to directly find and engage talent, set pricing events to help identify the best person for the right cost, and provide visibility into metrics and margin goals. Updated technology resulted in faster and better payment terms for contractors as well as a self-service system where managers could engage talent, oversee time entry, and post project ratings.

MBO worked side-by-side with the consulting firm to develop the platform, incorporating extensive service vetting on each engagement by top tax and legal professionals. MBO powered the engagement of all independents through one of three compliant engagement solutions, allowing flexibility of engagement while containing costs.

RESULTS

Better, Faster, Stronger

During their 2016 soft launch, the consulting firm engaged approximately 100 independent professionals and achieved nearly $1M in supply chain savings in just 9 months. Over the last four years, by directly engaging talent via MBO, the consulting firm engaged approximately 4,500 independent professionals and achieved more than $75M in supply chain savings across over half a billion in spend. They also realized an additional savings of over $12M by incorporating a middle engagement offering-what MBO calls Business Services-that helped to meet the different needs and requirements of independent professionals.

One of the reasons the consulting firm saw such success with their program was due to the fact that company leadership promoted a top-down strategic vision, setting regular goals and metrics. MBO is currently helping the consulting firm expand their program into other business segments within the company and is working to build out an international program for US travelers working abroad, foreign nationals working internationally, and also standing up a program directly with its global member firms. The consulting firm is also working with MBO to optimize their human capital planning to identify opportunities to leverage independent talent in cases where they previously would have deployed full-time resources. Together, these strategies could save the consulting firm millions in operational spend.
